When the curtains on the windows of my home started showing signs of age, my mother suggested purchasing new ones. However, when I attempted to buy replacements, I encountered difficulties with sizing. Our home has windows of various dimensions, making it challenging to find curtains that fit each one perfectly. To address this issue, I decided to conduct some research, which I will now share with you.
The main beauty lies in the fullness and length of the curtain, which is why measuring both width and length is important. While the right size of curtains, with perfect wavy fullness and proper length, enhances the beauty of the windows, the wrong size can detract from them. Therefore, we will delve into the appropriate curtain sizes for windows, covering both width and length.
Measuring Curtain Length
When it comes to the length of the curtains, there are several types commonly defined:
1. Windowsill Curtains: These curtains are the same length as the windows, this type of curtain usually used in the space where its unsafe to hang a long curtain, such as kitchen and bathroom, but if you have a suitable window, where sill length curtains look so bold and gorgeous and perfectly match with the rooms vibe, you can use them anywhere..
2. Float Curtains: These curtains end 1- 6 inches above the floor .this is the most common size of the curtain, sometimes float curtain length can be half of the length of the floor and windowsill. These type of curtain dont collect dust, hang straight without any break. You can use thsi size in any room of your house, no matter its living or bed. Also this size can be used in the door.
3. Floor-Length Curtains: These curtains hang from the curtain rod and nearly touch the floor. It stops about half inch above the floor, these type of curtain make your ceiling looks higher then it actual, and they also can be used in any room of your home.
4. Puddle Curtains: These curtains have an extended length of 1-15 inches from the floor, depending on the look you desire.this length provide a luxurious and traditional look, if you dont have fear of collecting dust you can choose these curtain. This curtain can be harmful for the babies, and not suitable for doors.
Measuring Curtain Width and Determining Panel Numbers
When selecting curtains, it’s crucial to consider both the width of your window and the desired fullness for optimal aesthetics and functionality.
1. Measuring Curtain Width: A common guideline is to ensure the curtain width is approximately twice the width of the window. This extra fabric creates a gathered, luxurious look when the curtains are open and ensures adequate coverage when closed. However, for a more tailored appearance, sticking to the exact width of your window is an option.
2. Determining the Number of Panels: The number of panels needed depends on both the window width and desired fullness. Given the recommendation to have the curtain width approximately twice the window width, the calculation for panel numbers can be adjusted accordingly.
To calculate the number of panels required, divide the total width of your window by half the width of a single curtain panel. For example, if your window is 100 inches wide and each curtain panel is 50 inches wide, two panels would suffice. Opt for an even number of panels for minimal stacking or an odd number for symmetry.
By considering both window dimensions and desired fullness, you can ensure your curtains achieve the desired aesthetic while providing functional coverage.
